POSITION PURPOSE

Reporting directly to the Senior Director, AMAtlas Services, the Data Scientist provides complex analyses and critical reports that are foundational to strategic, revenue-generating data and research services within AMAtlas, CASE’s global resource for educational advancement-related metrics, benchmarks, and analytics.  The Data Scientist helps to conceptualize data collection, management, and reporting systems, design data reporting and benchmarking tools and products, and develop software to support data cleaning, analysis, visualization, and reporting.  The data scientist will also serve as an internal consultant and project partner working with colleagues in other divisions to enhance data management, task automation, and supporting data-driven decision-making.   

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The core functions of this position include but are not limited to the following:

Program/Project Management

  • Conduct complex data analysis and develop visualizations for use in AMAtlas reports and presentations.
  • Design and automate data reports, benchmarking tools, and other data resources that enhance CASE member value.  
  • Collaborate with other AMAtlas global team members, including the Vice President, Data, Research and Technology;  the Senior Director, VSE; Senior Director, Research; and the Lead Software Engineer, Advancement Analytics, on the design of and development of code informing data management systems, processes, and platforms.
  • Together with the AMAtlas Services team, maintain and enhance product roadmaps for complimentary and revenue-generating products and services.
  • Deliver presentations and conduct trainings for CASE members, develop training resources for members supporting the use of AMAtlas data and resources, and contribute to development of thought leadership resources and content for the CASE DRIVE conference.
  • Serve as an internal consultant and project partner responsible for expanding data science capabilities internally at CASE and collaborating with colleagues to automate business intelligence tools and support data-driven decision-making and strategy.
  • Serve as a technical expert providing training and guidance to CASE staff on data science and use of data, analytics, reporting, and benchmarking tools.

Fiscal Management/Budget Responsibilities/Judicious Use of Resources

  • Directly contribute to budgeted services sales revenue, by developing revenue-generating products (reports and analyses) for CASE members globally.
  • Manage expenses relative to budget.
  • Exercise fiscal responsibility in the use of all CASE resources.

Liaison Responsibilities

  • Exhibit appropriate leadership toward and work cooperatively and supportively with all volunteers with whom this role interacts, including CASE’s volunteer leadership.
  • Engage with other CASE senior staff such that they may assist in delivering services as part of the CASE data cohort initiative under AMAtlas.
  • Work closely with other members of the CASE research team to analyze existing data, seek opportunities for new data acquisition, and develop insights and reports of value for members.
  • Collaborate with CASE colleagues around the world to ensure the best sharing of effective practices.
  • Provide consultation for data science application for internal use, including collaboration with CASE IT team and external consultants.

JOB COMPLEXITY AND KNOWLEDGE

The Data Scientist is expected to work with a high level of autonomy and independence, discretion, confidentiality, and diplomacy. The position interacts with CASE staff from across the world, and has frequent into contact with senior volunteers, members, and other high-level external key stakeholders. The Data Scientist will be responsible for his/her own time management and prioritization of tasks to ensure the key responsibilities are met.

Problem Solving and Judgement

High-level judgement and problem-solving skills are required, as the incumbent must frequently conduct new analyses and program reports with minimal supervision—serving as CASE’s residing expert on Data Science techniques and programs. The incumbent must also have a high degree of professionalism and integrity.

Professional and Organizational Knowledge

 The position requires that the incumbent quickly develop a deep understanding of CASE, its policies and procedures and an understanding of the culture and politics.

Requirements

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred in statistics, data science, computer science, information technology, economics, business administration, or related discipline with a strong focus on data science.
  • One to three years’ experience with data science techniques and processes.
  • Three or more years’ research or data analyst and/or business analyst roles, including development of data analytics and visualizations and reporting/benchmarking tools. Skills to include univariate and multi-variate statistics, data cleaning/management, visualization/dashboard creation, report automation, and scoring modeling. 
  • Experience with administration of data management systems.
  • Experience working with higher education institutions broadly, other non-profits, associations, or with a consultant or other vendor serving the advancement community preferred. 

 

Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency with the following:
    • Primarily: R, Excel (in particular for data analysis/modeling purposes)
    • Secondarily: SQL, SPSS, PowerBI, SAS, Tableau, OracleBI, IBM Cognos, Google Analytics
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint).
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to communicate technical concepts for non-specialist audiences
  • A commitment to engaging, supporting, and stewarding CASE members and volunteers.
  • A demonstrated interest in advancing education in the not-for-profit sector.
  • A strong commitment to an organizational culture celebrating diversity, equity, inclusivity, equity and belonging.
  • Project management, accountability, time management, and continuous improvement skills.
  • Proven ability to work independently and as a team player in a rapid-response business environment participating in idea formulation, project planning, problem solving, process improvement, sharing of expertise, and member support.

 

CASE Vaccination Policy: Vaccination against COVID-19 is an important tool in helping to prevent infection and reduce hospital stays and mortality. CASE vaccination policy is as follows for each region:

US/CAN and Latin America offices: To access a CASE office, you must be fully vaccinated and boosted for COVID-19 or have an approved exception to this requirement as an employee with an approved medical or religious exemption (U.S.) or be subject to testing or other national/local restrictions in effect where the CASE office is located.

Europe offices: CASE strongly encourages staff to obtain the most current COVID-19 vaccine and booster as soon as it is available to them unless they are ineligible to receive the vaccine due to medical reasons.

Asia Pacific offices:  To access a CASE office, you must follow government and property management guidelines.

 

Alternative Work Arrangement:  As of January 1, 2022, CASE implemented an Alternative Work Arrangement policy where, after 4 weeks of employment, eligible staff are given the opportunity to work from home up to 2 days per week and in office at least 3  days per week.
